Reader, This may surprise you, but I don't like giving "career advice". I'm not a career counselor, but sometimes people reach out to me for personal branding advice when they are in the middle of a job search. Now I usually stop them in their tracks and let them know that the best time to be building a personal brand is while you still have a job. Once you are out of work, your only job is to find a job. Here's the problem... No one knows who you are and how good you are at your job. In every workplace and industry, there's a frustrating reality that too many high-performing professionals and entrepreneurs face: they work hard, they deliver results, and they contribute meaningfully, but they remain largely unseen. Their efforts go unrecognized, their ideas unheard, and their potential untapped. This phenomenon is what I call the Visibility Gap. It’s how you ensure that your name is associated with your expertise, not just your job title. When done right, a strong personal brand:

You just need the people who matter, the decision-makers, collaborators, and champions, to clearly understand the value you bring. You already have the substance. You already have the receipts. Personal branding is about making those things visible in a way that’s strategic, sustainable, and authentic. Close the GapIf you’ve ever felt stuck despite your results, chances are, you’re not in a performance problem. You’re in a visibility problem. It’s time to stop being the best-kept secret in your company or industry. The Visibility Gap doesn’t close on its own. But with intentional personal branding, you can step into the spotlight, amplify your impact, and finally receive the recognition you’ve earned. 😝Thanks for reading!
